It is not necessary to understand the full meaning of these terms, what is important to know - that XHTML represents the meaningful content and CSS - is just a list of rules on how to display that meaningful content. When you open a website from your desktop or mobile phone, your web browser loads XHTML code or its meaningful content first. Then depending on what device you use, a desktop version of the mapping rules, or a mobile version designed specifically for mobile devices is loaded.
