It is not necessary to understand the full meaning of these terms, what is important to know - that XHTML represents the meaningful content and CSS - is just a list of rules on how to display that meaningful content. The same content could be represented differently depending on the size of the screen of your device and its other features.

When you open a website from your desktop or mobile phone, your web browser loads XHTML code or its meaningful content first. Then depending on what device you use, a desktop version of the mapping rules, or a mobile version designed specifically for mobile devices is loaded.
