On November 16, 2011 there was a great event in mobile web development. The revolutionary framework jQuery Mobile got final release status. Such news could not leave us indifferent, since we were waiting this for months.
Despite the name, jQuery Mobile is not jQuery for mobiles! It’s UI framework which requires the standard jQuery core. It's more like jQuery UI for mobile devices. It's really powerful and has plenty of features like:
- Lightweight size
- HTML5 markup-driven configuration
- Responsive design
- Powerful Ajax-powered navigation system
- Strong accessibility features such as WAI-ARIA
- Touch and mouse event support
- Unified UI widgets
- Powerful theming framework
At the same time it is compatible with all major mobile, tablet, e-reader and desktop platforms.
Our plans were to build a separate set of widgets for our mobile optimization engine based on jQuery Mobile framework. It would be a good alternative to our standard widgets set. This idea is currently in progress and you may expect more widgets for your mobile websites that extend all the benefits of jQuery Mobile.
In addition we decided to offer another free mobile optimized WordPress theme based on jQuery Mobile UI components. The theme got the name "jQMobile". It's absolutely free and has the same compatibility list as jQuery Mobile has. Exactly to say it is iOS, Android, Blackberry, Palm WebOS, Nokia/Symbian, Windows Phone 7, MeeGo, Opera Mobile/Mini, Firefox Mobile, Kindle. jQMobile WordPress theme can be used as a standalone blog solution for the desktop and mobile browsers as well as an addition to your existing desktop designed WordPress theme.
jQMobile features are listed below:
- Based on jQuery Mobile framework
- Compatible with touch-screen smartphones and tablets
- 3 skins included: Default, Valencia, Green
- ThemeRoller Mobile Support
- Widget ready
- Adaptive layout
If you want to customize colors of your jQMobile theme you may use ThemeRoller Mobile specifically designed for jQuery Mobile framework. It allows to create up to 26 unique color "swatches" marked by letters from "a" to "z". Each swatch defines the look and feel for a bar, content block and a button with normal, hover and pressed interaction states. Within your site, you may assign swatch letters to the elements on a page to mix and match swatch colors for really rich designs. Using jQMobile theme options you may upload customized color scheme downloaded from ThemeRoller. The elements available for customizing in jQMobile WordPress theme are: "Header", "Body", "Footer", "Post Teaser", "Sticky Post", "Widget", "Widget Content", "Comments" and "Comment Form".
